Exterior lighting can greatly enhance the night-time environment and everyone recognises good lighting in whatever form it takes, from their local bars and restaurants, to the stately museum, through to the grand architectural buildings and even to the local road network.
It can extend the use of an area or activity well into the evening, contributing to real and perceived security at night. On a broader scale, sensitive exterior lighting can instill a feeling of civic pride and significantly contribute to the regeneration of urban areas.

Certainly everyone recognises poor lighting as this can make us feel uncomfortable, insecure and even affect our mood. Poor external lighting however is now a potential nuisance. It is therefore important that issues such as glare, direction and settings are considered and that light pollution and light trespass are avoided.

| It is not only visual impact that counts. The creation of a safe and pleasant environment, the appropriate use of energy, ease of maintenance, the threat of vandalism and consideration of the appearance of the lighting equipment with its surroundings are all factors that need to be considered. The lighting of the nighttime environment; its squares, streets, parks, rivers and canal, its urban architecture both historical and modern are all recognized as being of great importance. Good lighting will enhance the experience of users, create a safe environment and encourage the evening economy. |
